Grain Elevators can be found in small towns throughout the Great Plains, located by roads and railroad tracks. The grain was shipped to regional mills. My artist books portray the reality of change rather than a romanticized idea of the past, displaying the economic, technological, and social changes that reshape urban and rural landscapes.
The majority of my imagery is from my own photographs, as well as some vintage ephemera. Computer software is used to alter and manipulate the images, which are combined with various book structures to create a harmonious whole.The books are inkjet or laser printed, hand cut, and hand-assembled using many traditional and nontraditional bookmaking techniques.
Artist Bio
R D Burton has been a book artist for over twenty years. Born and raised in Kansas, he received an MA in Studio Arts from Rutgers University, studied at the University for the Arts in Philadelphia, and has taken workshops at the Center for the Book in New York. He has exhibited his books in over fifty exhibitions nationwide. His work is in collections in the US and overseas, including the Smithsonian, Seattle Museum of Art, MassArt, University of California at Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon University. R D lives and maintains his studio in Havre de Grace, MD.
